The Power of a Healthy Routine

What is in a routine?  Many underestimate the power of a healthy routine.  It is the most fundamental structure of how we run our day, or how a day runs us.

A person’s routine describes a lot about them.  What do you do first thing in the morning?  Do you make coffee? Go to the bathroom? Brush your teeth?  What comes next?

How rushed does your morning feel?  Do you take time for self care?  I mean real self care, not like washing your face and taking a shower.  Do you give yourself a few minutes to ground yourself and establish your mindset for the day?

A great way to figure out your current routine and the way it makes you feel is to begin tracking!  Carry a small notebook with you and track what you do for an entire day from start to finish.  Next to each item you write, write a number from 1-10 on how stressed you felt while doing it (10 being maximal stress and 1 being no stress).  Look back at your day and see where you had the most stress.  Could you have changed the approach to that part of your routine?  Maybe add in some meditation, journaling, or just a simple time out before jumping in?

Self reflection on our routine is something most of us never do.  Our routine is dictated by the world around us.  Our work schedule, demands of loved ones around us, society telling us when to eat and sleep, etc.  While we are so busy building our routine to meet the needs and please others, we forget to take care of our own physical and emotional needs!  Now is the time to begin self reflecting to re-establish your routine to include time to take care of you!
